Christmas Breaks in London.
See in the festive season with a well earned visit to the Capital.
Whether shopping in Oxford Street, sightseeing, having a theatre break, enjoying a Carol Service,
attending a concert in St Pauls Cathedral, having a Christmas holiday,
spend New Year's Eve in Trafalgar Square, or just soaking up the night-time party atmosphere of Covent Garden and the West End lots to
see and do on a London Christmas and New Year break.
Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree. One of the most famous trees in the World, regarded fondly by many Londoners as the true symbol of a traditional Christmas. Given annually, by the people of the city of Oslo, as a token of Norwegian gratitude for the people of London's assistance during the years 1940-45. The Norway Spruce, over 60 feet high, is decorated with cascading strings of white light bulbs. the Lighting ceremony takes place during the early evening of the first Thursday of December. Singing during the ceremony is lead by the Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields. (Each evening in the build up to Christmas Day there is usually carol singing in the Square.)
Oxford Street Shopping
The highlight of many a visitors trip to London is Christmas shopping. With the Lights in Oxford Street
switched on by at least one celebrity promoting their latest single, during a very elaborate switch-on ceremony in early November, giving over 6 shopping weeks to go before
the big day. Christmas Breaks in London - many hotels will have Christmas short break offers.
Children and their parents will enjoy a visit to Santa in his grotto in many of the well known stores.
Visit Carnaby Street for Christmas Lights with a more traditional feel.
From lunchtime concerts to carols by candlelight to carols for the choir and audience, to
Christingle services to orchestral pieces by Bach, to readings by Betjeman. The Messiah by Handel.
Brandenburg Concerto on New Years Eve.
From Holy Communion, to the Blessing of the Crib to the Lighting
of the Trafalgar Square Xmas Tree, with singing lead by the Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields
to Midnight Mass, numbers are limited for services.
Trafalgar Square New Year.
Hundreds of thousands of revellers, many in party costumes congregate to spend New Years Eve in London.
The fountains in the Square are boarded off, as everyone waits in expectant silence for the chimes of Big Ben at Midnight
see in the New Year. Huge cheers from the thronging masses, followed by a huge firework display launched from the Eye
and from barges moored in the River Thames. Specially erected viewing galleries on both river banks
are often full very early in the evening, but there are lots of other points offering good views of the spectacle- in fact from anywhere
offering a good view of the Eye.
Most of the roads in an large area of central London from Vauxhall Bridge, to Blackfriars Bridge, taking in Mayfair, Westminster, Covent garden
and Strand will be closed from mid evening until around 3am when most of the London New Year Eve party goers have dispersed.
London Theatre Breaks. From
musicals to comedy the city
is renown for its theatre and nightlife. Popular shows are often sold out months in advance for the weeks between
Xmas and the New Year. Boxing Day shows especially so. Kids and grown up kids will enjoy
a traditional pantomime.
Boxing Day Sales. Whilst for many another day spent with family and or friends, for thousands Boxing Day heralds the start of the Sales. Discounts up to 70% are common, with some even more amazing one off deals to be had for those bargain hunters prepared to queue overnight, sleeping on a cold damp pavement, to be first when the doors of the West End particularly Oxford Street and Regent Street stores re-open.
